Daily Grind August 2nd, 2004
The Daily Grind was originally on August 1st, but I forgot, so I did it one day later.
I am summer jobbing at the distribution center again. They said taking photographs is not allowed in there, I did it anyway. Just for you. *wink*
This is what a mail carriers day looks like.

An ungodly hour. Time to get up, after a night with pretty much no sleep, again.

I get up, go to the bathroom, pick something for a quick breakfast, check the internet real quick, and of course look if someone in the Big Brother house is still up.

I am leaving. It is still really dark out, I dont like that too much. Especially on little ways without lights.

I obviously arrived, and it is still dark outside.

Here is my desk while I go that area. Yes, I need a pedestal to reach the top. *blush* I am the first person who has ever used it. How embarrassing is that!

Mail is sorted for the different areas and then again for the delivery areas in a sorting machine at a different location, and right here at the distribution center. They bring in the mail in these orange boxes. As far as I know, Salzburg is the only distribution center that does it this way. The system is brand new. It was different last year. They adjust and change it all the time.

Another very recent change. They put up this “box” about two weeks ago, and use it to put in the packages for about *counts* 21 areas. I marked the box where my packages are in.

6.32 am - Uh Oh, Too Slow
Someone is picking up his packages. These T Shirts are the “new” uniforms. They used to be blue, but now they are grey yellow polo shirts. He didnt like to have his photo taken, but nothing was able to stop me, bummer that he moved.

I am all done and ready to pack. I am the fastest every day, thats why they call me Renn Semmel. But we arent supposed to pack before 7.00 am. Enough time to annoy all of the others, which I love to do, I admit.

I packed 3 bags, 2 of them are brought out in my area by postal cars. Weight limit of a bag: 30 kg. If the bag is too heavy, it will be left behind. You will know when the bag is too heavy when you cant find your depot bag out in the area. That is the one with which I am going to start. We are not allowed to leave before 7.30 am. The latest thing they do to stop us from leaving early is, that they lock the elevators, they are mad.

On this day, I thought I could bike over to my area. What a very bad idea. If you care to know why, read this blog entry. Lesson learned for now.

8.29 am - Auer Von Welsbach Strasse
This is where I start. The whole area consists of these little blocks. This road is a residental area for WW 2 veterans. I have more roads like this with “normal” people too of course. Only 2 single houses, a church, a pediatrician, a post office, a drug store, and some little stores. This area is quite nice.

First mail bag is empty, and the next one is already waiting.

I wasnt able to take too many pics in the morning because there were just too many people around. Here is where the people divide the mail for the different areas.

Here is my box. Everyone has 3 of those. All the mail that is not coming from the sorting machine, can be picked up here.

They had to “fire” an awful lot of people over the last 2 years. This is another new thing. The priority mail, letters from the courts and so on, has to be handled extra. There were people that used to do it, but not anymore. You stamp and sort them, depending which post office is in charge in your area. For me it is 5015 right now.

Guess, yes, another new thing. They used to bring us the ads to our tables. But now, they sort them in. Right now we have about 2 or 3 ads per day. I have 900 + parties, 800 of them get ads, you can add for yourself how many ads we have to deliver each day, it is insane. But it also means, extra money!

This is where the group leaders are. Behind the plastic windows. There used to be 8. Now there are 4 or so.

12.53 pm - Everyone Is Home
Everyone has gone home already. This stupid biking affair stole all of my time.

12.53 pm - All Done, Again
All done for the day. I like to leave each day with everything done. Other student carriers like to “collect ads and packages", not me. Need to rebuild my reputation. *cough*

I am home!!! I usually go and play Neopets when I get home. To settle down and stuff. *lame excuse*

We watched Big Brother The Show in the evening. Some of the people terribly annoy us, so we swtiched here and there to Expedition Austria The Show.

I was so tired, that I went straight to bed afterwards, without taking anymore pics, sorry.
I hope you enjoyed this Daily Grind. Come back again soon to check for more!
